What`s in a program

Research shows that learning letter names and understanding that words are made up of individual sounds provides a powerful basis for reading success.

In fact, phonemic awareness-the ability to understand and hear that words are made of discrete sounds or phonemes-is the single best predictor of success at learning to read.

Hooked on Phonics Get Ready to Read was designed with this in mind. The entire program focuses on a systematic approach to teach children the basics of uppercase and lowercase letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and letter sounds.

About the CD-ROM

The Hooked on Phonics Get Ready to Read Letter Sounds CD-ROM is the interactive companion to the Get Ready to Read-Letter Sounds program.

This fun, practice component is designed to be used together with the workbooks and games to help pre-readers master essential skills and build a foundation for reading success.
Your child will have fun learning the songs and playing games that help teach letter sounds.

How to use the CD-ROM component with your Hooked on Phonics Get Ready to Read-Letter Sounds program:

As you introduce each letter sound in the workbook:

  • Refer to the songs on the CD-ROM to reinforce the skills your child is learning.
  • Play the songs after your child learns the letter sound. Your child will see the corresponding letter displayed on the screen as he listens to the letter sound in the song.
  • Match the songs you play on the CD-ROM to the lessons you are practicing in the workbook. Make sure your child has mastered the current letter sound before trying to move on to the next.
  • After your child has learned all the letter sounds, play the letter sound games as a reward or to review.
  • Click on the "I did it!" star to celebrate your child's success.

Educational Benefit

This activity provides practice in letter sounds, which is a critical step in learning to read.

Letter Sound Games

Click on the letter that Pop Fox asks for.

The letter sound games focus on identifying letter sounds in relation to their letter name.

Pop Fox says a letter sound, and your child tries to click on the matching letter.

The "ABC game" focuses on matching sounds to uppercase letters, and the "abc game" focuses on matching sounds to lowercase letters.

My Letter
Adventure Map

My Letter

The letters on the Map follow the same order as the sessions in the workbook and the progress poster.

Each letter on the Map represents the same letter sound in the workbook, giving your child practice recognizing and hearing the letter sound.
This letter sound on the Map also leads to two songs that feature the letter sound your child is learning. While listening to the songs, an example of the selected letter sound displays on the screen, giving your child a visual reminder of the letter sound.
Encourage your child to stand up, sing, and move to the music.
