What`s in a program

Research has shown that explicit, systematic phonics instruction along with reading great books is the most effective way to teach children to read.

The Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read programme was designed with this in mind. The entire programme covers Level 1 and Level 2 phonics instruction, including four colour-coded workbooks.

Children have different learning styles. Therefore, included are multi-sensory tools to accommodate visual, auditory, and tactile learners. You and your child will use one colour-coded level at a time, so set the other aside until you're ready to use it.

The Audio CDs and Flash Cards

Audio CDs and flash cards introduce your child to the sounds letters make, and how the sounds combine to form words.

There is a friendly voice on the audio CD to lead you and your child through the flash cards and workbooks.

The WorkBook

The workbook helps your child learn to sound out words with different letter-sound patterns. The entertaining stories in the workbooks give your child practice reading those words.

The Helper Word Cards

Helper Word cards give your child practice with frequently used common words that often cannot be sounded out, like says and come.

These cards are numbered, starting in the yellow level, and continuing the numbering throughout the programme.

Word Play Cards

Word Play cards give your child practice at spelling words while playing games.

Get Ready to Read

Here are some ways to help motivate your child to want to learn to read:

  • Take the My Reading Adventure poster out of the box. Show your child the stickers that go on it-one for each story or book.
  • Hang up the poster in a place that's easy for your child to see and reach.
  • Explain that each space on the poster represents a story or book and soon they will be reading them to you.

Progress Poster and Stickers

The My Reading Adventure poster is designed to help you and your child keep track of progress and celebrate your achievements together.

Hang the poster in a place that's easy for your child to see and reach. Celebrate your child's success each time they read a new story by sticking a star on the poster.

HOP Books

Hooked on Phonics Books ("HOP Books"), created by award-winning authors and illustrators, have been written in a carefully structured way to help your child to discover the joy of reading.

Your child will have been introduced to almost every word in a HOP Book before reading it.

This helps ensure reading success whenever your child picks up a HOP Book. These books are numbered, starting in the yellow level, and continuing the numbering throughout the programme.
